BRIEFING REGARDING THE NIGHT OF THE MURDER
It is the night of 28th of February 1986. After coming home from work at about 6, the Prime Minister of Sweden Olof Palme and his wife decides to have a quiet night in. Something changed their minds, their son Morten with girlfriend called and asked the Palmes out for a movie. The prime minister a cultured and well educated man of his prime age (59) wouldn’t turn his son down, it’s good to kick back, from all the hard work.
The bodyguards for Prime Minister Olof Palme and his wife Lisbeth Palme were called off for the night and had a long response time for the protection of Palme during the night of the murder. The security detail of secret police Alf Karlsson had gone on home watch and wouldn’t be answering calls unless it was from the government or the military in case of a crisis. Palme and his wife strolls to the subway after 8 from their double floor apartment in Gamla Stan Stockholm at Västerlånggatan 31. They are standing for the subway ride since its busy traffic of Friday night activities in Stockholm.
But during the journey home from the cinema Grand on Sveavägen in Stockholm city, they were not alone. Men equipped with radios were watching every step of their way. The movie finished at about 11. Coming out from the cinema Palme decided for a walk towards Gamla Stan since the walk was fresh exercise.
At today’s Urban Deli street corner Palme is shot dead and another bullet grazed Lisbeth Palme’s back. The manhunt begins for one or more murderers. The investigation is the largest criminal investigation of all time, world wide. During the 34 years since the murder, police have processed hundreds of thousands of contributions to the case, mostly from the public. Some good leads were trashed by investigators.
Over a hundred men have confessed to the murder but all without substance. At the height of the investigation, in the 1980’s, a then 42 year old drug addict was convicted of the Palme murder in a first court. An appeal court dismissed the charges since it became apparent that the suspect was innocent of charges and framed. Another appeal for the supreme court of Sweden was turned down against the prosecution appeal.
